The EU is a group of around 800 Christian students who join together to present Jesus Christ to the University, to encourage each other to stand firm in Christ, and to help each other prepare for a lifetime of Christian service. EU is about friendship, encouragement and service. It’s about sharing coffees and prayer. It’s about hanging out between lectures, being Christian together, and inviting friends to join us under Jesus' loving rule. It’s about celebrating all that God has done for us in Him. EU has been doing this since 1930. Whether you have been a Christian for years or are still investigating the Christian faith, you are more than welcome to join in - it is our hope and prayer that you do.
EU is a registered club and society of the Sydney University Union. But we are a club with a difference: we meet together because God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ through His death and resurrection. And we meet because God is at work on our University campus in the hearts and the minds of our fellow students, drawing them to Christ. Because God is at work and it is our great privilege to join him in doing what he is doing, EU is not so much a club as task force - praying, sweating and working with God to bring all things together under the Lordship of Christ.
The objects of the EU
The best way to understand EU is in terms of our goals, or as we call them, our three objects, which direct all our activities:
- To present students with the Christian Gospel and to lead them to a personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- To strengthen Christians in their faith and witness and to encourage them to continually submit every aspect of their life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
- To ensure that Christians in the University are made aware of the nature, needs and challenge of Christian service at home and abroad.
Each of the objects springs from the wonderful, life-giving Lordship of Jesus. And because they reflect what God has done and is doing, they define us a group and give shape to everything we do.
What is an evangelical?
We are the Evangelical Union. The word evangelical comes from the Greek word euangelion which simply means 'gospel' or 'good news'. So we are the Gospel Union, or since the gospel is the great announcement that Jesus is Lord, we are the Jesus-is-Lord Union.
